Because of Jesus Christ (Video)
Our Eternal Home
On Sunday, I attended Relief Society in the Millrace Ward as part of their annual Ward Conference. For the closing hymn, we sang a song titled “Hay Un Hogar Eterno” which translates literally to “There is an Eternal Home”. As far as I know, this hymn is unique to the Spanish hymnal. The first time I heard the song was when I was a missionary many years ago in Mexico. Usually, sung at funerals, the message of this beautiful hymn is that there is a future and a place…where we can be free from pain…and where all can feel the love of our Savior.
Jesus explained these ideas to his ancient apostles this way…
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you…I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also… I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:1-6)
We live in a chaotic and turbulent world. It’s easy to be pulled into the swirl of daily events…the hyperbole of humanity. Satan would have us believe that this world is all there is…that we have no accountability or spiritual parentage...no hope of something greater.
The Savior’s teachings, however, bring a spiritual focus to our lives which anchors us and keeps us from being pulled into the adversary’s illusion.
The truth is that “there is an eternal home”. We are eternal beings with heavenly parents. There is accountability in this life, but it is inseparably connected with the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ. Following Him can bring an inner peace that “passeth all understanding”, even when all around us is in commotion. (Philippians 4:7)
President Nelson, in his role as President and Prophet, has invited all of us to “ turn [our] heart, mind, and soul increasingly to our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ.”
This requires conscious effort. We choose to take time to pray fervently, each day. We choose to prepare for the sacrament each week. We are reminded of our eternal nature by daily study of His words; by frequent temple worship.
I invite and encourage all of us to avail ourselves of these simple things that bring peace… as the world screams ever louder to distract and discourage us.
I pray we can all stay firmly anchored to Him and follow Him back to our eternal home.
I love you.
