Weekly Message: Here Am I Send Me
In chapter 3 of the Book of Abraham, we learn that in the premortal world, there was one among the many “noble and great ones” who was “like unto God”. He was a teacher and leader among them and at a critical moment, he responded to a call to SERVE with the words, “Here am I, send me”.
The scriptures reveal that the one who was “like unto God”, was Jehovah or Jesus Christ. Although we do not know every detail of Jesus’ offer to serve, we understand that His primary offer was to atone for our sins.
What thoughts went through His mind BEFORE making the offer?
How much love and obedience were required for Him to CHOOSE to offer Himself for this crucial mission?
We may not ever learn the answers to those questions, but I think it is not coincidental that at the beginning of his ministry, Isaiah spoke the exact same phrase…“Here am I, send me”. (Isaiah 6:8)
Did Isaiah understand fully what his service would entail…the opposition, the joy of service, the eventual mortal outcome, the eventual extra-mortal outcome?
The scriptures testify that the Savior’s (and Isaiah’s) words and actions are a pattern for life.
Each of us CHOSE to come to this earth as part of our Father’s plan for our progress and growth. And now that we are here on this earth, we each have the same privilege…
…to say “Here am I, send me”.
It is a daily, if not hourly, CHOICE. And it is not easy.
This weekend we will have the privilege of hearing from some of our sisters and brothers who, like us, have also offered to serve…who, like us, also walk this path imperfectly, and with faith.
They will share experiences, lessons learned, and inspired counsel about how to deal with the challenges of our mortal existence. They will teach us how to prepare for the Second Coming of the Savior. They will teach us about the joyful rewards that will come in this life and the next from our faithful discipleship.
I invite all of us to say “Here am I”, and make time to listen…to feel their encouragement…and to feel the witness and whisperings of the Holy Ghost.
I love you all,
President Gardner
