Weekly Message: Patriarchs and Blessings
A couple of weeks ago, we had the privilege of visiting with Sister and Brother Bowles in their lovely home, as a presidency. Although today, their physical health is fragile, for their entire adult lives, this stalwart couple has tirelessly served the members of our stake: Brother Bowles as the Stake patriarch giving more than 1850 patriarchal blessings, and Sister Bowles (every bit his equal) with her ward and family responsibilities. To be in their home is a cherished experience. Their testimonies and love for the Savior are palpable.
In 2019, due to health concerns, it became necessary to release Brother Bowles from active service as the stake patriarch. The Lord inspired us to recommend Brother David Tidwell, a former counselor in the stake presidency. His call was approved by the Quorum of the Twelve and I was authorized to ordain and set him apart. Since that time, Brother Tidwell has been giving marvelous and miraculous blessings to members of our stake; young and old. Together with Sister Angela Tidwell, who currently serves as the Relief Society President in the Taylors Grove ward, they have created an environment in their home where the spirit of the Lord is present in abundance.
Never seeking the limelight, we are so fortunate to have these humble and faithful couples serve in this unique way in our Taylorsville Stake community.
Patriarchal blessings are inspired pronouncements about the unique gifts and life journey of the recipient which include a declaration of their lineage in the house of Israel and very personal counsel from the Lord. They can be a valuable source of encouragement, comfort, and heavenly wisdom in our lives. Every worthy, baptized member is entitled to receive a patriarchal blessing when they reach an age of maturity sufficient to appreciate it.
Because a patriarchal blessing is eternal, we should not assume that everything mentioned in our patriarchal blessing will be fulfilled in this life. As we worthily seek them, every promise will be fulfilled in the Lord’s time.
Patriarchal blessings are sacred and may be shared with immediate family members, but should not be read aloud in public, or read/interpreted by others. Not even the patriarch or bishop should offer interpretations of blessings.
Elder Don R. Clarke recently taught,
“Your patriarchal blessing is written down so you can read it over and over again. Let your blessing serve and guide you. Through prayer and your patriarchal blessing, you can know God’s plan for you.”
If you have not yet received your patriarchal blessing, I strongly encourage you to meet with your bishop and ask your Father in Heaven so you can make the needed preparations to receive this wonderful gift.
If you have received your patriarchal blessing, I encourage you to study it humbly, prayerfully, and frequently, and to follow the counsel it contains. I promise as you do, you will find guidance, comfort, and protection.
Until next week…know that I love you and know that the world needs your light.
