Weekly Message: Peacemakers Needed?
In my study this week, I re-read President Nelson’s talk, Peacemakers Needed. I smiled as I got to the part of his talk where he said,
“At this point you may be thinking that this message would really help someone you know. Perhaps you are hoping that it will help him or her to be nicer to you. I hope it will! But I also hope that you will look deeply into your heart to see if there are shards of pride or jealousy that prevent you from becoming a peacemaker.”
Hmmm…Yes…I was one of those people who was thinking that.;)
How about you?
As President Nelson is so capable of doing, he really made this idea relevant for me. I realized another way I needed to place the Savior at the center of my life when he said,
“I am talking about treating others in ways that are consistent with keeping the covenant you make when you partake of the sacrament. You covenant to always remember the Savior. In situations that are highly charged and filled with contention, I invite you to remember Jesus Christ. Pray to have the courage and wisdom to say or do what He would. As we follow the Prince of Peace, we will become His peacemakers.”
Might Jesus’ disciples have felt the same when they heard His Sermon on the Mount?
“Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; (Matthew 5:38-44)
I imagine these teachings must have seemed radical and maybe even ridiculous to the Jews at that time who were under oppressive Roman rule.
President Nelson’s comments may seem just as difficult in our day as we face the growing influence of a rapidly advancing adversary.
Interestingly, President Nelson was not the only one who taught on this topic.
President Eyring, Sister Camille Johnson, and Elder Christofferson all added insights for me into this idea
¨The rising generation will become the nurturers of the generation to follow. The multiplier effect will produce a miracle. It will spread and grow over time, and the Lord’s kingdom on earth will be prepared and ready to greet Him with shouts of hosanna. There will be peace on earth.¨
¨When we “put on Christ,” it becomes possible either to resolve or to lay aside differences, disagreements, and disputes.¨
´
¨Repentance, through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, is what relieves us of the weight of the rocks of sin. And by this exquisite gift, God’s mercy relieves us from the heavy and otherwise insurmountable demands of justice. The Atonement of Jesus Christ also makes it possible for us to receive strength to forgive, which allows us to unload the weight we carry because of mistreatment by others.¨
How might we each carry out President Nelson’s words and follow his example of building bridges of understanding where there was once animosity and distrust?
I pray that we will each seek to discover how President Nelson’s and our Savior’s words apply to us.
“As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are to be examples of how to interact with others—especially when we have differences of opinion. One of the easiest ways to identify a true follower of Jesus Christ is how compassionately that person treats other people.
“The Savior’s message is clear: His true disciples build, lift, encourage, persuade, and inspire—no matter how difficult the situation. True disciples of Jesus Christ are peacemakers.”
I love you all.
President Gardner
